I just saw a FB post saying this same anti mask shit happened in 1918 and was a good indicator of why it got so bad then. I have to research that.. Anyone heard that before?

Just finished a book on the 1918 pandemic.

A lot of weird and crazy stuff happened. Nobody should panic because "it's only the flu" was a common sentiment just before the second wave really kicked off. That sentiment changed pretty quickly because in the following weeks the general consensus was that a calamity of biblical proportions was upon the people.

Spitting in the street could get you beaten and arrested.

A rumor floated around that dogs were carriers of the disease and people turned in their family pets to the police to be executed

Another rumor was that this disease was an attack by Germany (remember this started right at the end of WW1) and there were accounts of Germans being murdered and hung in the streets.

Parents would die in their beds from a violent pneumonia and their spouses would lay in that same bed still alive but immobile from the disease, covered in feces and blood while their children cried and starved in the room over. Family and friends wouldn't even enter to save that child too terrified to be themselves infected.

There were accounts of trains leaving in one station in India with the living and arriving at their destination a day later with carts full of dead.

You know... just shit like that.

There weren't a whole lot of freedom or die anti-mask types roaming around after the second wave.

Maybe you should take a look at other countries to determine the effectiveness of masks, not states in the US wherein a significant portion of the population think the virus is fake news and are happily attending covid parties.

And it's not supposed to be a silver bullet. All that matters is dropping the transmission rate which in turn drops the reproduction number and if masks do that even in the slightest way then it will save lives.

I don't mind wearing a mask, I mind the connotations it carries. Few things we choose to wear are without symbolism and in a time when mask-wearing is a political statement, choosing to wear a mask pretty much defines which side of the aisle you're on. I'm sure they're somewhat effective, though clearly not the silver bullet people seem to think they are, but with the rate of infection being so high, it's not a matter of "if" you're going to catch it so much as "when". Wearing a mask might prevent me (or people around me) from getting the coronavirus right now, but eventually we're all going to catch it. And when what you're doing isn't saving lives so much as slightly delaying an inevitability, well... it's hard to give a damn.

Yea let's just all catch it at the same time and see what happens to our hospitals.

florida and texas combined dont even sniff the 32K+ deaths we saw from new york lol. also florida and texas combined have just as many deaths as californa. deaths are the most crucial metric.

texas was the gold standard but were a red state so the media will never acknowledge it despite califiorna mirroring everything texas did and having far more deaths lol.

Something that you really need to understand before you continue on with your garbage is that we expect death reports to lag behind case reports.

CA had a pretty significant initial outbreak which is why they have more deaths than FL and TX right now. Most of those deaths in CA are from April and May. As of right now both TX and FL are recording 100+ daily deaths pretty regularly, which is even LESS than what CA was experiencing in April and May.

Another thing that you should understand so that maybe you can save yourself the embarrassment and tone down your rhetoric just a bit is that when it comes to epidemics MOST of the death tend to occur in a very short period of time. That's just how exponential growth works. If this trend keeps continuing for even just a few days then the numbers will start looking like what we saw in NY.

And that's funny because all of you do the exact same tactic when you argue politics. Just point to vague / perceived hypocrisy on the left and call it a day.

But it's not an equivalency.

One is the general population protesting.

The other is by the actions of our nations leader who should be doing everything he can to get the pandemic under control.

The same people protesting and rioting weeks prior wanted police to beat the fuck out of and arrest people going outdoors in the park with few to no people around. Activities outdoors with sunlight, fresh air, and social distancing warrant police violence to enforce the protocols, but mass gathering at an essential grocery store indoors is dandy lol. Mass gathering for social justice does not warrant police violence to enforce pandemic protocols of keeping your ass at home to save lives.

That's interesting I thought we were talking about the experts a minute ago, not the opinion or the actions of the general population.

And didn't you guys want to roll in the military on the protestors? And wasn't that not only the opinion of many of the general population on your side but also the president and some republican senators?

Trying to stop protests from happening doesn't typically result in smaller protests. There is a lot of history on this lol.

Offering free testing for protestors, recommending masks be worn and for people to quarantine if they have symptoms was really the best way to control covid in the midst of global protests.

The protests didn't help but there really isn't a whole lot you can do in that situation without making the protests more intense.

The post in the OP wasn't necessarily about covid having a 1% case fatality rate, the point was that a seemingly low number like 1% can have devastating consequences for an infectious disease that has become pandemic.

The number could be 0.5% instead and you still get horrific outcomes in terms of deaths, hospitalizations, etc...

People who think that this having a 0.5% or 1% case fatality rate is no big deal and that everything is safe.... those people are gravely misinformed and you should listen to public health experts and doctors instead of those people.
